Healthy marriages are built on submission (Ephesians 5:21).
Ephesians 5:21 is written to everyone, therefore it is true that submission is necessary for every one of us not just our wives.
Submission to authority is a fundamental necessity to any organization. Without submission, authority is disrupted and trouble results.
An orchestra is in harmony when all of the musicians are submitted to the conductor. The planes avoid crashing when the pilots submit to the ATC. Businesses run smoothly when all the departments submit to the plan. So what about our homes? Who is in charge? The man in marriage is called to lead his “little church” as the pastor and the wife co-leading as his assistant. We see this model everywhere. The Presidents need Vice-Presidents, Pastors need Co-Pastors. Leadership is decentralized so that layers of authority carry out the orders from the top. If at any level, there is rejection of leadership, as the saying goes “Houston we have a problem”.
With the rise of feminism in America, the role of the man has been challenged on many fronts. Admittedly, men have fallen short of the ideal and deserve to be challenged but does that mean they are to be replaced or shuffled away as no longer necessary. Recent “gender transformation” thinking has come to the point where it would seem that gender really does not matter anymore.
Wives, realize that your submission is a gift to your husband and your children and it reflects the submission of Christ.
Husbands you do the same when you consider your wife more important than yourself (Philippians 2:3).
Our love in marriage is not to be tied to our spouse’s performance (conditional) instead our love is to be tied to our promises to love unconditionally (vows).
If God’s love for you was tied to your performance, where would that leave you? His love instead is tied to His character and to His promises. His love is always an undeserved gift.
In 1 Corinthians 11, the hierarchy of authority is described by the Holy Spirit. The head of Christ is the Father and the Head of the man is Christ and the head of the woman is man. Everybody reports to somebody! That language is an offense to the unbeliever. But, it is the language of heaven. Heaven runs on submission (James 3:17).
We are called by God to model marriage to our children and those around us. The world is doing its very best to wreck that model. The desire to live life independently of God, to disregard mother and father and authorities is a spirit of rebellion that threatens to destroy our nation. Rebellion against authority is the devil’s work and those verses are written as warnings all over the Bible especially in the Last Days.
Christians are certainly called to be counter-cultural. The values of the world tell us to make our self desires and ambitions more important than anyone else. The world, the flesh and the devil are real and they are moving to undo the will of God. For now, God has given the world free will to obey or disobey. We all have a choice every day on who we will follow, self? the world? God?
The will of God is that we love one another even our enemies. Disobedience is refusal to love. Let’s determine to agree with God. He is God, He is perfect. He lived submission and He invites us to surrender and do the same.
Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children, and live a life of love,
just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant sacrifice and offering to God.
